The '70s and '80s rule as two of the most popular bands from that era join forces on Chicago/Earth Wind & Fire - Live at the Greek Theatre, a two-disc, nearly three-hour concert recorded in Los Angeles in 2004. These groups scored dozens of hits in their heydays, and if neither has come up with much of anything that's new in the past two decades, the sold-out audience at the Greek Theatre could hardly care less. Both Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire, have soldiered on despite key personnel changes over the years (Chicago bassist-singer Peter Cetera and EWF founder Maurice White are long gone, and much missed); here they perform energetic and tasteful versions of everything from "Make Me Smile," "I'm a Man," and "Saturday in the Park" (Chicago) to "That's the Way of the World," "Fantasy," and "Serpentine Fire" (EWF), among many others, to rapturous response. Nothing too exciting about all of that--in fact, it's a bit like witnessing a couple of very skilled tribute bands at work--but there are a few surprises, as when Chicago keyboardist-singer Bill Champlin takes the lead on "After the Love Has Gone" (which he co-wrote) and EWF singer Philip Bailey returns the favor on Chicago's "If You Leave Me Now." The highlights are the first and last portions of the show, when the two bands (complete with horn sections) share the stage for "September," "25 or 6 to 4," "Shining Star," and more, displaying genuine joy at performing together and generating a huge, infectious sound delivered with high definition visuals and digital audio. --Sam Graham

Great Show in glorious high definition

This is a great show that will please established fans of one or both of these groups, as well as entertain newcomers to one or both as well. The various instruments and backgrounds on the stage are fairly bland and lifeless, notably during the Chicago segment. The sound travels all across the soundstage for an exciting, enveloping experience. Deeper bass doesn't become too pronounced or violent, but it blends perfectly into the soundtrack as a whole. As is the case with every concert I've reviewed to date, black levels are deep and true. Lyrics sometimes sound trumped by the instruments, but those instruments sure do pack a wonderful wallop. Instead, there is a sense of isolation and a lack of warmth in that regard. The colorful outfits and instruments not only look great on this disc, but also compliment the band's style very well. Every instrument is rendered remarkably well and comes through the sound system with crystal-clear clarity.
Fortunately, the music itself fares very well. At nearly three hours in length, fans, both new and old, have the opportunity to meet and enjoy their favorite stars from these two power groups like never before, in glorious high definition. As an established fan of Chicago and a newcomer to Earth, Wind & Fire, I came away from the show extremely pleased with the experience from both an entertainment and critical perspective.never felt like I was actually at the Greek and mingling amongst the crowd. Earth, Wind & Fire bring some life and pizazz to the show not only through their energy and tempo, but in the vibrancy of their clothing and instruments as well. The DTS track, especially, offers fantastic imaging. Detail is solid if not a bit unremarkable.

For oldies acts, these guys are still very vibrant!

I got it for her on a whim. The few young guys add some energy, but, surprisingly, the original members of the band are in fine shape and kicked butt. I've never been a big fan of theirs, but Mr. Bailey and Co. OK, first off, I would never have purchasd thid DVD were it not for my wife. The idea of having two artists join together, opening and closing the show in unison, was a good one. She'd seen some of it on one of the cable channels and raved how good it was. I watch DVD 2.
With Pete Cetera long gone, I was prepared for a watered-down "oldies" band. Considering these guys have been together now some 40 years, and the original members are in their sixties, they performed with a cohesive energy that took me back to my youth. Then they toss a coin to see who goes first and Tower of Power gets the win. On the performances of the early tunes, the band was spot on. The second CD opens with Chicago's performance, and closes with both groups jamming together for several tunes. We got our money's worth. My wife watched DVD 1.
We're both more than happy with this DVD. kept my attention. As it turns out, this two-CD concert is great. It opens with Chcago and Towner of Power, two horn-driven bands, playing several songs together. (I stopped following the band after Chicago VII, and I own every CD from Chicago Transit Authority through Chicago VII.nothing since has really caught my interest). Fortunately, much of the concert was geared toward Chicago's early hits. They were solid.

The only reason I gave 4 stars is that there are some lulls in the performance although judicious use of the remote can soon dispatch them. Delve a little deeper and spend some time with this Blu-ray DVD and you'll discover a musical excellence that transcends time and generational change. Regardless of musical taste, you won't be disappointed. Just what we need, another bunch of aging rockers from the 60's and 70's trying to cash in on the nostalgia boom. Well, that's what it seems on the surface. Both groups have an infusion of youth (not surprising as some of the original members have gone to that great concert in the sky) but maintain the original sound albiet with much greater fidelity than was originally possible with 70's audio technology. There are two reasons to buy this Blu-ray DVD, firstly the picture and sound quality are almost reference level (I own a HiFi store and use it for demo and system set ups), secondly the musical performance is just brilliant with band members of both groups interchanging and singing each others songs. All in all this is a disk that anyone with a musical bent and good audio/video system should consider adding to their collection.
