Editorial Reviews:

A mysterious mist, thick with blood-thirsty creatures, descends on a small town, where a group of people holes up in a grocery store to fight for their lives.

Writer-director Frank Darabont, who showcased the softer side of Stephen King in his film adaptations of The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, turns to darker material for The Mist, his latest King adaptation about a group of ordinary townspeople trapped in a supermarket by a mysterious fogbank. Thomas Jane is top-billed as a Maine illustrator who attempts to calm the frightened shoppers, but his job is cut out for him from the get-go, first by the discovery of malevolent creatures lurking in the mist, and then by the mad mutterings of Mrs. Carmody (Marcia Gay Harden), a local eccentric who calls for Old Testament-style sacrifices to appease the supernatural forces. Darabont delivers monster movie thrills and understated social commentary with equal skill, and he's well supported by his cast (which includes Andre Braugher, Toby Jones, William Sadler and Jeffrey DeMunn) and the vivid special effects by KNB EFX, which effectively mix CGI with models and stop-motion animation (the terrific monsters were designed by legendary comic book artist Bernie Wrightson). And for those curious about how the novella's downbeat ending has translated to film, suffice it to say that Darabont's conclusion is at once different and more unsettling than King's. --Paul Gaita

Worst ending ever

Before the ending, the movie was about struggling for survival and using everything you've got to protect the ones you love (yes, that includes not abandoning your own child to walk a woman home in monster filled mists). Then you just randomly give up. The movie was actually pretty good up until the last few minutes. The ending changes the message, making the moral of the story: sit on your [.]. and if you aren't killed by the crazy religious nuts, random people will swoop in and rescue you. As an added bonus, apparently will to survive only lasts for a couple of hours.

Brilliant, compelling horror film

This is a fantastic film. The direction (from the man who filmed "The Shawshank Redemption") is spot on, and after 30 minutes you will find yourself completely pulled into the situation. This is a brilliant and inventive story that has the power to shock, and by the end I was stunned by what had happened. This is suspense / horror cinema of a very high standard.

Horrifying! Shocking! Message about Faith?

This is what movies are all about. Classic film work for me. This movie was so worth watching, I preferred to hold my piss until the movie was finished. Thanks Stephen King because now I want to buy it. I didn't even know my wife was sitting next to me during the film. I rent movies and easily get distracted if the movie is boring or stupid.

Great cinematography, excellent casting, and pretty original. It's gripping, suspenseful, eerie. I highly recommend it to anybody. The ending is shocking, however, the movie has a message and not just a brainless sci-fi thriller with cool special effects. I read some negative reviews here but I'm afraid this movie was actually a lot better than what I read.

I hated this movie. I hated, hated, hated this movie. HATED it.

The characters are stupid and one-dimensional; the concept too absurd for any suspension of disbelief, and the story goes from dull to violent to absurdly dull. The 'surprise ending' is totally predictable given the cruelty with which the storyline treats all of the characters. This is among the worst movies I have ever seen. I would rather have sinus surgery than sit through this miserable piece of detritus ever again. Thanks to Roger Ebert for my subject line.
