Editorial Reviews:

Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage join forces to avert unspeakable carnage as The Rock explodes onto Blu-ray Disc! Co-starring Ed Harris, this spectacular! (NBC-TV) thrill ride will rock your world in this astonishing format. When a vengeful ex-general seizes control of Alcatraz Island and threatens to launch missiles loaded with deadly poison gas, only a young FBI chemical weapons expert and a notorious Federal prisoner have the skills to penetrate the impregnable fortress and take him down. Catch every instant of rapid-fire action in eye-popping 1080p, while the phenomenal 5.1 48 kHz, 16-bit uncompressed audio puts you smack dab in the middle of the mayhem. Prepare to experience the awesome power of Blu-ray High Definition!

Between his high-octane debut, Bad Boys, and 1998's wannabe blockbuster Armageddon, hotshot director Michael Bay forged his dubious reputation with this crowd-pleasing action extravaganza. In it a psychotically disgruntled war hero (Ed Harris) seizes the island prison of Alcatraz and threatens to wage chemical warfare against nearby San Francisco unless the government publicly recognizes the men who were killed under Harris's top-secret command. Nicolas Cage plays the biochemist who teams up with the only man ever to have escaped from Alcatraz (Sean Connery) in an attempt to foil Harris's terrorist scheme. As one might expect, what follows is an action-packed barrage of bullets, bodies, and climactic confrontations, replete with enough plot contrivances to give even the most jaded action fan cause for alarm. It's a load of hooey, but the cast is obviously having a grand old time, and there's enough wit to make the recycled action sequences tolerable. If you're ordering this movie on Blu-ray, be careful with the volume knobs on your home-theater sound systems, because The Rock could cause partial hearing loss and structural damage to your home. --Jeff Shannon

User Comments About The Rock [Blu-ray]

Welcome to the Blu-Ray

Fantastic movie, finally on Blu-Ray. I already have this on DVD, and am glad I now have it in HD on Blu-Ray. Now, I'm good to go.

Great action ride, sound is amazing!

This is a great story of personal redemption, laced with awesome action sequences and spectacular sound. The angles and editing are fantastic, and the "crisis" of consciousness that the characters face, along with the humurous sub plot of Nick Cage's character all blend for a fun, entertaining action movie.

Great Movie w/ the Best Picture Quality Available

Extremely crisp and LOUD. I've always been a fan of this movie, the Rock. Michael Bay catches a lot of flak about his Hollywood-esque action movies, but you can't find anyone that knows action better than him. The disc itself is a great testament to HD media. Wonderful, colorful shots followed by more wonderful shots. Being one of my all-time favorite action flicks, I think the purchase was well worth it with a combination of great visuals, extremely entertaining cast, and a healthy dose of in-your-face-action coupled with it being all presented in HD. Most extras are in standard def too.

It's also packed full of extras, although some are really quite useless. ;) Don't knock Michael Bay until you see this action classic. Very clear picture, especially for a movie 12-13 years old. The cast is full of great actors too like Sean Connery, Ed Harris, and Michael Beihn. This movie proved his abilities and put him on the map as an action director.

The scenes are beautiful. You literally get a lot of bang for your buck. The audio will blow you away. I paid $15 for this movie.

The Rock defintely rocks on blu-Ray!

It's got excellent action sequences, terrific performances by the cast, humor, a little romance and a good plot makes this a sure fire crowdpleaser to any action lover out there. FBI chemical warfare agent Stanley Goodspeed (Nicolas Cage) now must join up with former criminal Mason (Sean Connery) to rescue the hostages and stop the madmen from threatening the city. the extras are phenomenal like a movie showcase spotlight that shows scenes that showcase the ultimate in HD pic and sound, Audio commentary, World Premier of the movie, featurettes, interviews, Trailers and TV Spots. At San Francisco in Alcatraz, a group of terrorists lead by ex-general Hummel (Ed Harris) who demand a ransom as they threaten to launch missles with deadly gas into the San Francisco bay area if they don't get what they want. Explosive and action packed thriller which is Michael Bay's crowning achievement besides "Transformers" delivers all the thrills and chills that anyone needs. Jerry Bruckheimer and the late Don Simpson lavishly produced this movie and Michael Bay was just perfect to do this movie, the movie does co-star Tony Todd ("Candyman) and Michael Biehn. This Blu-Ray makes the movie never looked or sound this great before.
