Major Kusanagi and the rest of Public Security Section 9 hit the ground running as the second season of Stand Alone Complex (2004) begins: Their new adventure centers on a complex mystery even more dangerous than the case of the Laughing Man. Terrorist incidents linked to the mistreatment of Asian refugees after World War IV threaten to ignite a powder keg in Japan. Kusanagi, Batou, and even Chief Aramaki chafe when they're drafted to protect Prime Minister Kayabuki from would-be assassins. But the threats to the government are linked to the Individual Eleven, a cell that recalls the May 15th Incident. (On May 15, 1932, a group of junior naval officers and army cadets assassinated Prime Minister Inukai Tsuyoshi, ensuring that power would remain in the hands of the militarists.) The members of the Individual Eleven--except for Hideo Kuze, their charismatic leader--commit mass suicide in a bloody spectacle that recalls the theatrical death in 1970 of Japanese writer Yukio Mishima. Kuze's campaign to win political freedom for the refugees grows increasingly violent, involving suicide bombers, Russian mobsters selling stolen plutonium, and strained relations between Japan and an Imperial America that is trying to reassert its military dominance in the face of economic weakness. And what role does the devious, hideously scarred intelligence officer Kazundo Gohda play in these actions? The Tachikoma robots speculate that as they are abandoning collective consciousness and developing individuality, a dependence on the Net is leading humans in the opposite direction. That trend makes people more vulnerable to cyber-viruses involved in the plot--unless Section 9 acts in time. Most of the adventures take place in bleak, gray and brown settings, which contrast effectively with the bright, colorful cyberworld the Major and the Tachikomas visit. S.A.C.--2nd Gig continues the tight plotting, dynamic action sequences, and interesting character relationships that made the series a hit. if you are over 18 this is something you should watch. even if you cant buy it you should watch a few episodes its worth it.

Good Movie in the Stand Alone Complex series *Spoilers*

It is based after the second season and the Major resigned from Section 9 and it is 2 years later, new recruits and Togusa the new leader of the team, they are doing business as usual until noted figures begin committing suicide one by one, the major is thought to have been involved in it. It is action packed and has some pretty weird stuff, for example while investigating Batou sees the Major for a brief moment and helps her, she then escapes. They soon hunt down the company behind it all and uncover the vast net of lies. As the movie goes on the Solid State Society rears its head, and when Togusa comes too close to comfort, he is cyberhacked and takes his daughter in for cyberization but he is given the choice of either committing suicide and saving his daughter or losing her. I can only hope that it means another movie is in the works. After the Major nearly goes out with someone known as the Puppeteer, it ends on a good note and may not be the end of the series. I just finished Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex Solid State Society. As he pulls the trigger, the Major makes her appearance and saves Togusa from death.

I do not believe that they have a DTS audio track (only a Dolby Digital). From what I have seen, the limited edition versions of the individual disc releases did have versions with DTS. The first season, BTW, takes a lot from the manga source material, while the main story of this series is something completely new, I believe. Anyway, my copy of the box set has the DTS logo on the box of the first four DVDs. series, much more so than the first movie. At Anime Expo 2008, Bandai announced that rereleases would be forthcoming in Blu-Ray format. Regardless, this set is still worth your money if you're interested in the DVD version.
(This isn't entirely unexpected, 2nd Gig was broadcast in HD on one of the satellite-based networks, I think). The box that contains all the individual dvd boxes does not have a DTS logo, so it's only four of the inside cases that are misleading. I greatly enjoyed this series and the first S.A.C. If you're looking for a discussion about the content, please look elsewhere. (I have only checked disc 1 so far).

It gets more to the point faster than the first season, though the first season is by no means bad. 2nd GIG kept me engaged and wondering what was going to happen next. I am an ardent 'hater' of Anime, but Ghost in The Shell Anime series is an exception. Its by no means a thriller Anime, but its in depth story plot and the many twist and turns are what kept me engaged. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves good story plot lines and good plot twists. This is an excellent series. For an Anime its storyline was superb.
